We have known as much as possible about the Atlantic Ocean because it was the aim of our traveling. In the middle of the North Atlantic there is a large area comparatively free of currents. It is called Sargasso Sea because of the large quantity of sargassum seaweeds that drifts into it. Besides the surface currents recent investigation has established the existence of a general oceanic circulation, consisting of an undercurrent of cold water from the Equator to the poles. My sister made inquiries that the greatest depth recorded in the Atlantic Ocean was the Milwaukee Depth – 30,246 feet – off Puerto Rico, West Indies. The mean depth of the Atlantic Ocean is 12,900 feet. Cross sections of the North Atlantic between Europe and America show that its bed contains two great valleys lying in the north and south direction and separated by an intervening ridge. Each of these valleys is about 500 miles wide. After the journey my sister is surely planning to give away all the information about the Atlantic to her friends. Parts of continental shelves of the Atlantic Ocean are very important. Continental shelves are gently sloping ledges bordering the continents. The wider parts of the Atlantic continental shelves lie off Western Europe and off Newfoundland. Here, in the North Sea, is the Dogger Bank; off Newfoundland, the Grand banks. Both of these areas are rich fishing grounds, known especially for cod and herring. Important petroleum fields are located on the continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico. Our holidays were impressive without any doubt. We enjoyed every day of our staying in Key West. My sister insisted on our relaxing trip on a small boat to view dolphins with our own eyes – they are cute and clever. They seemed to give away their kindness and charm to all who were watching them. I think that the Atlantic Ocean keeps much unknown and unique information for those who are eager to know it. |
